Fireproof Home Safes

Given that the term ‘fireproof safes’ has become an important label in the home safe world, it’s important to understand that no safe is fireproof. Why? Because no safe can withstand extreme temperatures indefinitely. Safes typically come with a fire rating, which indicates how long the safe can withstand an predetermined external temperature. The longer the rating, the longer your safe will keep your valuables safe in the event of a home fire.

What to Look for When Choosing the Home Security Safe

As the saying goes, you get what you pay for. When you’re shopping for a home safe, we always recommend you consider the value of what you’re storing. If you have a few trinkets you want to lock up, a budget safe or lock box may do the trick. But if you have thousands of dollars in valuables and cash, you’ll want a sturdy home safe that offers both fire protection and burglary protection.

Features like pry-resistant doors and solid steel doors provide an increased layer of defense against an intruder. In short, if your priority is to protect your valuables, we would caution against the budget purchase.

Home Safe Fire Ratings

Fire ratings are not regulated in the safe industry. Manufacturers conduct their own testing, if they test at all. Because these tests are not standard, comparing one fire rating to the next can be difficult.

As you compare brands and models, take a close look at how quickly a manufacturer raises their furnace temp during a test. The typical home fire reaches at least 1200 degrees within minutes. If a manufacturer’s testing approach gradually increases the temp, this can skew your perspective.

What Is a Good Home Safe Fire Rating?

Generally, home safe fire ratings range from 30 minutes to two hours at 1200 degrees. The best home safe fire rating is two hours (120 minutes). When it comes to the highest level of protection, this is what we would recommend.

What are the Dimensions of a Home Safe?

Home safes are available in a wide range of sizes. At NW Safe, we carry small, medium, and large home safes that can be easily installed in most rooms throughout your home. One of our most popular home safes is categorized as a medium sized home safe, with a height of 41.75 inches, a width of 24.5 inches and a depth of 19 inches.

This safe can be installed comfortably in most closets. Smaller compact home safes can be as small as 14.75 by 19.5 by 15.375 inches. These discreet home safes can be installed beneath a sink, under the bed, or in the back corner of a closet to help keep them hidden.

What Are the Best Locks?

We carry three primary types of locks: dial, electronic, and biometric. All the locks we carry are UL listed. Generally, any safe we carry can accommodate one of these three types of safe locks. Both electronic and biometric locks can be convenient to use and faster to open. Two of our most popular locks are the SECURAM Scanlogic and SECURAM ProLogic L01. Both of these SECURAM UL listed electronic locks have proven to be reliable and easy to use.

The classic dial lock is preferred by some as it doesn’t rely on a battery. Many customers also like the old school look of a dial lock. All the safes we carry have a “magic module” footprint for the lock unit, allowing an experienced gun safe technician the ability to swap out your lock if you want a new style.

What Should You Keep in a Home Safe?

The best home safes are designed to protect against fire, theft, and humidity. The most common items to store in a home safe are:

  • Important documents
  • Cash

Are Home Safes Waterproof?

No. Home safes are not waterproof. While they can offer some water resistance, they do not feature a water-tight seal. If you want a waterproof solution, we recommend SureSeal boxes. These boxes are water-tight and can be stored inside of a safe.

How Big of A Safe Do I Need?

The most common regret we hear from customers is that they wish they’d bought a bigger safe. So if you talk to most of our employees, they’d tell you to buy the biggest safe you can afford. That being said, you need to look at how much space you have and make sure the safe you are buying fits.

What are the Top Selling Home Safes?

Currently our most popular home safes are the Liberty Premium Home LX series. These safes come equipped with a Liberty deluxe door panel. Made in America, they feature a 10-gauge steel body and doors with three hardened steel plates that help protect the lock from drill attacks.
