Serious Protection for Serious Value

A clear, step-by-step guide to choosing the right ISM safe for serious, commercial-grade protection at home or work.

TL In a Home

Buying a high-security safe is a big decision. If you are looking at an ISM safe, you are already thinking about serious protection for firearms, precious metals, cash, documents, or family heirlooms. ISM safes are not basic home safes or gun safes. They are built to a much higher standard and are designed to stop real break-in attempts from highly skilled robbery crews.

For more than 40 years, we have been honored to help businesses and individuals purchase and install their at-home insurance policy — a reliable safe. While we’re intimately familiar with ISM safes and the buying process, we know it can feel overwhelming. In this guide we’ll explain how to buy an ISM safe in a clear, easy-to-understand way. We’ll cover what ISM safes are, how to choose the right security rating, what size you need, and what to expect during delivery and installation.

What Is an ISM Safe?

ISM (Israeli Safe Manufacturing) builds high-security safes designed to meet commercial and residential protection needs. These high-security safes are often referred to as ‘commercial safes.’ They are commonly used in:

  • Homes with valuable firearms or collections

  • Jewelry and precious metals storage

  • Businesses with cash or sensitive documents

  • Anyone who wants protection beyond a standard gun safe

ISM safes are known for thick steel, advanced locking systems, and UL ratings that measure how long a safe can resist a professional attack (more to come of ratings).

Discover why ISM safes, built since 1914, are the gold standard in security and fire protection—offering unmatched strength, durability, and peace of mind.

Why Choose an ISM Safe?

Many people start with a standard gun safe and later realize they need more protection. ISM safes are often chosen when:

  • You want real burglary resistance, not just fire protection

  • You store high-value items like gold, silver, or rare firearms

  • You want a safe built to commercial-grade standards

  • You value a safe withstanding an attack for an extended period of time

An ISM safe is an investment in security. It is designed to protect what matters most when everything else fails.

7 Steps to Buying the Right ISM Safe for You

Step 1: Understand UL Security Ratings

The most important part of buying an ISM safe is choosing the right rating. All but one of the ISM safes have been independently tested by Underwriters Laboratory — a third-party testing agency that’s internationally recognized for their stringent standards.

ISM Ratings

  • TL-15 — Protects against tool attacks for at least 15 minutes on the door.

  • TL-30 — Protects against tool attacks for at least 30 minutes on the door.

  • TL-30x6 — Protects against a tool attack for at least 30 minutes on all six sides of the safe.

  • TRTL-30x6 —Protects against tools and torches for 30 minutes on all six sides of the safe.

  • TRTL-60x6 — Protects against tools and torches for 60 minutes on all six sides of the safe.

  • TXTL-60x6 — WORLD’S HIGHEST SECURITY SAFE — Protects against tools, torches, and explosives on all six sides of the safe for 60 minutes.

UL Testing Standards FAR Exceed Preceptions

Prior to any UL safe test, technicians are given the full specs of the safe in question and are able to fully disassemble the safe. Furthermore, the clock during testing only runs while technicians are actively working on the safe. If the technicians stop for any reason (to change tools, consider a different attack angle, or to simply take a break), the clock stops.

Even a 15-minute test can, in reality, often take hours to be completed.

Why the TXTL-60X6 Isn’t Technically UL Listed

An ISM TXTL or Super Diamond represents the highest level of safe security available. While the Super Platinum is ISM’s highest UL-listed safe, the TXTL goes further, engineered to withstand explosive attacks and extreme force.

Buyers typically choose these safes to protect assets that are truly irreplaceable—financially, emotionally, or both—often valued in the millions. Although the TXTL is more expensive, the increase over a Super Platinum is relatively modest considering the added protection. While some are used commercially, most TXTL safes are installed in private residences by owners who want the best security possible.

Step 2: Decide What You’re Protecting

Before choosing a model, make a list of what will go inside your safe. This helps you pick the right size and interior layout.

Ask yourself:

  • Will I store precious metals, such as gold, silver or bullion?

  • Will I store cash?

  • Will I store jewelry, watches or designer handbags?

  • How many firearms will I store?

  • Will my collection grow over time?

It’s almost always better to buy bigger than you think you need. Most people outgrow their safe faster than expected.

Step 3: Choose the Right Size and Weight

ISM safes are heavy—very heavy. Some models weigh over 5,000 pounds. That weight is part of what makes them secure, but it also affects installation.

When choosing a size, consider:

  • Where the safe will be installed (garage, basement, main floor)

  • Doorways, stairs, and tight corners

  • Floor strength and load limits

  • Ceiling height and door swing clearance

A professional dealer can help you measure and plan ahead so there are no surprises on delivery day.

Step 4: Understand Lock Options

ISM safes typically come with (2) high-security, La Gard Group 1 UL-rated locks. You may be able to choose between:

  • Other Mechanical dial locks

  • Electronic keypad locks

  • Biometric locks

  • Dual-lock systems

Old-school mechanical locks are known for their ability to operate without any electrical assistance. While electronic keypad locks and biometric locks offer faster access. Both can be excellent choices when properly installed.

If fast access is important, ask about lock response time, battery backup, and a given lock’s performance history.

Step 5: Fire Protection Considerations

ISM safes focus first on burglary resistance. But due to the nature of their thick walls and heavy duty materials, ISM safes offer extreme fire protection. 2 Hours at 1850 degrees.

Step 6: Professional Delivery and Installation Matters

This is not a DIY project. ISM safes require professional delivery and installation. A professional team will:

  • Safely move the safe without damaging your property

  • Properly place and level the safe

  • Anchor it(ISM’S do not come standard with bolt holes) *We offer bolt down holes as an option.

  • Ensure the lock and door operate correctly

A safe that is not installed correctly can lose security value. Professional installation protects both your investment and your home.

Step 7: Work With an Authorized Dealer

Buying an ISM safe is different from buying a safe online. An experienced dealer will:

  • Help you choose the right UL rating

  • Recommend the best size and configuration

  • Coordinate delivery and installation

  • Provide long-term service and support

Authorized dealers understand local building codes, installation challenges, and real-world security needs. This guidance is just as important as the safe itself.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Buying too small

  • Choosing fire rating over burglary protection

  • Installing without professional help

  • Focusing only on price instead of security level

  • Ignoring future growth

Avoiding these mistakes can save money and frustration later.

Is an ISM Safe Right for You?

An ISM safe is ideal if you:

  • Store precious metals or large cash amounts

  • Want the highest security commercial-grade safe at home or business

  • Value long-term protection and peace of mind

  • Own high-value firearms or collections

If basic theft protection is all you need, a standard safe may work. But if security truly matters, and only the best will do, ISM is built for that purpose.
