Protecting Wealth with True High-Security Safes

Safeguard the wealth you’ve worked a lifetime to build with a high-security safe you can depend on.

TRTL Safe filled with gold and cash

If you have over $100,000 in high-value assets like jewelry, precious metals, or cash and aren’t sure how to properly protect them, you’re not alone.

There is a growing distrust in traditional banking institutions. Safety deposit boxes have beeb widely eliminated. More and more individuals are looking for secure, private, and accessible storage solutions. But the truth is—most residential safes simply aren’t built to protect high-value assets from sophisticated thieves.

Since 1988, we’ve helped individuals and businesses protect their valuables. We’ve seen firsthand how a safe is your last line of defense. Making sure you buy a high-security safe that’s equivalent to the value you’re protecting is essential. To help you decide which safe is right for you when you’re protecting over $100,000 in jewelry, precious metals, and cash, we’re going to cover:

Why Standard Gun or Home Safes Aren’t Enough

Gun Safe Cut Open

When most people think of safes, they picture a basic gun safe or a box-store home safe. These may be adequate for lower-value storage. They’re not engineered to withstand planned, professional burglary attacks.

In 2024 alone, more than $140 million in jewelry losses were attributed to organized theft and burglary. These weren’t random smash-and-grab incidents. These were coordinated crime rings. They used advanced cutting tools, torches, and mechanical expertise to defeat weak points in standard safes.

Standard safes—even some “high-end” gun safes — don’t have the steel thickness, composite or barrier materials needed to resist skilled attacks. They’re designed to deter casual theft, not professional burglars targeting high-value assets.

And, it’s not simply jewelry stores that are being targeted. High-net-worth individuals, especially professional athletes and ex-professional athletes, are a key focus for theft groups. In February 2025, the New York Times reported:

The complaint unsealed Tuesday [2.18.2025] alleged that two subjects stole a safe containing watches, jewelry, cash and personal items from Portis’ residence, as well as a Louis Vuitton suitcase and designer bags, with the total of his stolen property valued at around $1.484 million.”

This was not a one-time occurrence. The theft throughout the country has continued, with a recent spree in the greater Seattle area:

The crew targeted potential targets…They didn’t seem to care if anyone was home. In all, they made off with more than $700,000 in luxury watches, jewelry, and designer leather goods from six athlete burglaries.

Understanding Real High-Security Safe Protection

When you’re storing six or seven figures of value, the safe protecting it must meet stringent tool and torch resistance ratings. These are known as UL TL and TRTL ratings. They indicated how long a safe can resist an attack by professionals using mechanical and thermal tools.

(UL stands for Underwriters Laboratories, an independent third-party testing agency that’s respected worldwide for its uncompromising standards and testing procedures.)

A high-security safe should have:

  • Multi-layer composite construction for tool and torch resistance

  • Certified UL ratings such as TL-30×6 or TRTL-30×6 or higher

  • Extended fire ratings to protect against total loss

  • Anchoring or installation options to prevent removal or forced entry

  • A track record of use by banks, jewelers, and institutions securing millions

Why ISM Safes (Israeli Safe Manufacturing Safes) Are the Global Standard

ISM Installed in a Closet

When your protection needs go beyond what a gun safe can offer, ISM becomes the gold standard.

For decades, ISM has been recognized worldwide as a leader in ultra-high security tool- and torch-rated safes. Their safes are engineered to withstand prolonged attacks from professional burglars — the same kinds of attacks used against financial institutions.

  • UL TRTL-30x6 and TRTL-60x6 ratings: Resistance against cutting, drilling, torching, and prying attacks on all six sides for 30 minutes and 60 minutes, respectively.*

  • Built for multimillion-dollar protection: Commonly used by jewelry stores, banks, and precious metal dealers.

  • Fire protection: Extended protection to safeguard your valuables from fire as well as theft.

In fact, Jewelers Mutual—the largest jewelry insurance provider in the world—has begun requiring many of its clients to upgrade to TRTL-rated safes due to escalating theft losses in recent years.

*UL rating time limits are deceivingly short. They are based on the actual time certified technicians are actively working to get inside the safe. Any time the technicians take a break (to change a tool, have a bite to eat, or re-evaluate their plan of attack), the timer is paused. Furthermore, technicians are provided with the full specs of the safe being tested and allowed to fully disassemble the safe before testing. In reality, a 30-minute ‘test’ could take all day.
