Episode 63 Discussion Synopsis

00:27 - 03:51 | Waiting Until It's Too Late

One of the biggest mistakes we see is not buying a safe at all.

Recently, we met with a customer who needed to protect hundreds of thousands of dollars in valuables. We recommended a tool-rated safe that fit their needs and budget. Even though they agreed it was the right choice, they decided not to buy anything because of the price.

Unfortunately, that decision leaves their valuables completely unprotected.

We also meet people who come to us after a burglary or house fire. By then, their valuables may already be gone. While a safe cannot undo a loss, it can often help prevent one.

Our advice is simple: be proactive instead of reactive. Buying the right safe before something happens is almost always less expensive than replacing what was lost.

03:51 - 07:53 | Buying a Cheap Safe Can Cost More

A low-priced safe often becomes an expensive mistake.

Many of the service calls we receive involve safes purchased from big-box stores or online retailers. These safes frequently use low-quality electronic locks that fail long before they should.

In many cases, the lock cannot simply be replaced because the safe was not built using the industry-standard UL lock mounting template. That means extra labor, modifications, or even replacing the entire safe.

Thin steel construction is another concern. Some inexpensive safes use steel so thin that they offer very little protection against forced entry. We believe it's better to spend a little more upfront on a quality safe than to pay for repairs, replacement, or stolen valuables later.

07:53 - 13:50 | Buying Too Small or Choosing the Wrong Security Level

Another mistake we see every day is buying a safe that's too small.

Many customers quickly outgrow their first safe. As collections grow, so does the need for more storage. Gun safes are a great example. A manufacturer may advertise space for 30 firearms, but once shelves, optics, and accessories are added, the real capacity is often much lower.

The same idea applies to valuable collections like gold, silver, jewelry, and important documents.

As precious metal values have increased, many customers who once had less than $100,000 in valuables now have several hundred thousand dollars or more. Others have watched their collections grow from $500,000 to nearly $1 million.

When that happens, a residential gun safe may no longer provide the level of security or insurance coverage they need. Choosing the right security rating from the beginning can save thousands of dollars and prevent another expensive upgrade later.

13:50 - 18:46 | Buying Online Without Local Support

Buying a safe online may seem convenient, but many buyers don't realize what happens after they place the order.

Professional delivery involves much more than dropping a safe at the curb. At NW Safe, we inspect every safe, transport it carefully, install it where it belongs, and make sure everything works properly before we leave.

Many online orders are shipped through multiple freight terminals. Every transfer increases the chance of dents, scratches, or serious damage. We've even seen damaged safes travel across the country before someone finally refused delivery.

A quality safe deserves professional handling from start to finish.

18:46 - 19:59 | Don't Assume "Free Delivery" Includes Installation

One final mistake is assuming free shipping includes professional installation.

In many cases, "free delivery" only means the safe is delivered to your property. It may still be sitting on a pallet at the curb or in the driveway. Some freight companies even deliver safes that they cannot unload themselves.

A safe is not like ordering a household appliance. These products are heavy, difficult to move, and often require specialized equipment and experience.

At NW Safe, we believe delivery isn't complete until your safe is safely installed, inspected, and ready to protect your valuables. That extra level of service helps ensure your investment is protected from day one.

19:59 - 22:55 | Hire the Right Team to Move Your Safe

Moving a safe is much different than moving furniture.

Many freight companies use equipment designed for standard shipping pallets, not heavy safes. Because of this, we often see safes tipped over or damaged before they even reach the customer's home.

We also hear from customers who choose a cheaper moving company instead of hiring safe-moving specialists. Unfortunately, many of those calls come after something has gone wrong. We've seen safes left on stair landings, tipped onto their doors, or abandoned because the movers couldn't finish the job.

In many cases, customers end up calling us to rescue the move. Emergency service usually costs more than hiring experienced professionals from the beginning.

Choosing the right company protects both your safe and your home.

22:55 - 26:41 | Professional Service Is Worth the Investment

Safe delivery and installation require specialized equipment, years of experience, and a trained crew.

At NW Safe, our installers use professional trucks and equipment to safely move and install heavy safes in almost any situation. We invest in experienced employees because we know the quality of the installation matters just as much as the quality of the safe.

While we are not the lowest-priced option, we focus on delivering the best value. Time after time, customers tell us our installation crews exceeded their expectations. When protecting valuable firearms, jewelry, precious metals, or family heirlooms, professional installation is an investment that pays for itself.

26:41 - 29:36 | Bolt Your Safe Down for Better Protection

One of the easiest ways to improve security is also one of the least expensive.

Bolting a safe to the floor makes it much harder for thieves to pry it open or remove it from your home. Even if you plan to move in a year or two, the added protection is well worth the small cost.

Many people worry about the bolt holes left behind. In most cases, those holes can be patched with very little evidence they were ever there.

We've seen thieves wrap chains around unbolted safes and pull them right out of garages. A properly anchored safe creates a major obstacle that adds valuable time during a burglary. For the cost, bolting your safe down is one of the best security upgrades you can make.

Discover why you should bolt down your safe, the dangers of not bolting down a safe, and our go-to alternative if bolts aren’t an option.

29:36 - 32:19 | Don't Forget About Moisture Protection

Protecting your valuables doesn't stop with burglary protection.

Moisture inside a safe can damage firearms, documents, and other valuables over time. Fortunately, preventing humidity is inexpensive. We recommend using both a dehumidifier rod and a rechargeable desiccant pack. Together, they help circulate warm air while absorbing excess moisture inside the safe.

Even safes located in garages can stay dry with the right setup. It's a small investment that helps prevent costly rust and corrosion later.

32:19 - 35:11 | Think Long-Term When Buying a Safe

A quality safe is one of the few purchases that can protect your valuables for decades.

Many people spend thousands of dollars on appliances or home upgrades without much hesitation, yet they hesitate when buying the safe that will protect everything inside their home.

Not all safes offer the same level of protection. Some inexpensive models can be opened with simple tools in only a few minutes. Others are designed to resist serious burglary attempts and protect much higher values.

That's why we encourage every customer to research their options, read reviews, and speak with a specialty safe dealer before making a decision.

The right safe may cost more upfront, but it can prevent losses that reach into the hundreds of thousands — or even millions — of dollars. Our goal is to help every customer choose the right level of protection the first time and avoid the expensive mistakes we've seen too many people make.
