The short answer is no. As long as the safe is drilled by a qualified safe technician.
Drilling a safe may sound extreme, but it does not automatically ruin the safe. In fact, an experienced safe technician can often drill, open, repair, and restore a safe without leaving visible signs of the work. The key is knowing where to drill, how to repair the opening, and how to protect the safe afterward.
Drilling Should Be a Last Resort
A good safe technician does not immediately reach for a drill. The first step is to listen to the problem and figure out what caused it. From there, the technician should start with the easiest and least expensive solution. Drilling or other more involved repairs should only be used when simpler methods will not work.
After 18 years of working on safes, I can only think of two that were damaged badly enough that repairing them did not make sense. Both had major problems, such as severe rust, corrosion, or damage caused by improper use or placement.
In most cases, a safe can be repaired. When drilling is necessary, there are a few basic rules we follow:

Hide the drill hole whenever possible.

Properly repair and fill the hole.

Reinforce the drilled area so it is harder to attack again.

Leave the safe working as well as—or better than—it did before.
The goal is not simply to get the safe open. It is to return it to the customer in good working condition.
The Factors and Considerations for Opening a Safe
Be Careful Who Opens Your Safe
If someone immediately starts talking about cutting large holes in your safe or using angle grinders and saws, consider getting a second opinion. Opening a safe is a specialized skill. While many qualified safe technicians are also locksmiths, not every locksmith specializes in safe work.
An experienced safe technician will usually ask for photos before coming to your home or business. They may also ask about the safe's brand, model, lock, symptoms, and what happened before the problem started. Those questions help the technician diagnose the problem and estimate the cost before arriving.
In most cases, we arrive with a clear idea of what may be wrong and a plan for opening and repairing the safe. Sometimes the solution is surprisingly simple. We recently opened a safe by figuring out its combination from an old combination card. The safe was open and the job was complete within 25 minutes.
Safe Technicians Know What’s Behind the Door
Some safe problems require much more specialized knowledge. A safe may have detached boltwork, broken welds, a spinning handle, or another internal failure. In these situations, the technician needs to understand exactly what is happening inside the door.
That knowledge also helps prevent unnecessary cosmetic damage. For example, we recently removed a pull handle and used an existing mounting hole to inspect an internal failure. We then drilled a small opening underneath another door component to open the safe.
After the repair, the drill holes were completely hidden. We filled them with steel epoxy and ball bearings, which also made those areas more difficult to drill in the future.
Commercial Safes May Require Different Repairs
Commercial and high-security safes can be more complicated. Features such as glass relockers and anti-drill barriers may prevent a technician from drilling through the front of the safe. In some cases, we may need to enter through the side instead.
When that happens, the hole can be reinforced after the repair. We may install a carbide insert and weld it into place. Steel epoxy can then be used as a body filler, followed by touch-up paint or another method of hiding the repaired area. The finished safe is functional again, and the repaired area may actually be harder to drill a second time.
Replacement Parts Should Look Right
Repairing the inside of the safe is only part of the job. The outside should look right, too. When replacing a mechanical lock, the new dial and dial ring should match the safe whenever possible. The finish and color should also work with the original design.
In some cases, we upgrade front-read dials to top-read, spy-proof dials. Black chrome or black powder-coated finishes with white numbers and markings can also make the dial easier to read. The goal is to make the repair look intentional, not like someone simply replaced a broken part with whatever was available.
Electronic and Mechanical Locks Can Be Replaced
Electronic locks can also be replaced or upgraded. We typically match the lock housing to the color of the safe's handle and choose locks with a strong history of reliability.
In many cases, we can also convert a mechanical dial lock to an electronic lock or replace an electronic lock with a mechanical dial. A well-equipped safe technician should carry common locks and replacement parts so customers have options when a repair is needed.
Don’t let the wrong lock keep you from accessing your safe. Make sure to install the proper U.L. Listed lock on your safe based on your needs.
A Drilled Safe Can Still Be a Good Safe
Seeing a drill come out does not mean your safe is about to be destroyed. When drilling is performed by an experienced safe technician, the opening can often be hidden, repaired, and reinforced. Once the work is complete, you should have a secure, working safe — not a safe with a large hole left in the door.
The most important part is choosing someone who specializes in safe opening and repair.
