Shop Talk with Jr. & Kael
If you only take one thing away from this episode, let it be this: Include her in the process. You can thank us later.
Weāre bringing it close to home for some of those tough marital discussions (or not so tough depending on the marriage) in Safe Space Episode 5. Since we began selling safes in 1988, weāve been helping folks protect what matters most ā their loved ones. And itās an honor.
When it comes to navigating big purchases in a marriage, weāve seen it all. And thereās no right way. But with more than 100 years of combined experience selling safes, we can tell you there are some approaches to smoothly making a cohesive decision that work better than others. Ā

1. Question: Best ways you've heard men convince their wives they need a new safe?
Kael: I try to help these guys out with this. I encourage guys to bring their wives in and make them a part of the decision process. Depending on the woman, each one has different ideas of what a safe is or where the safe is gonna go.
That's one of the reasons why we have such a large selection in different colors of safes is to show women, āHey, this isn't just some ugly gray box that theyāre used to seeing at Costco or Home Depot.ā
Bringing her in and making her part of the decision-making process is super important. She can pick out the color.
Before you come in with your wife, you should have a couple of spots picked out where you think it might go. I think you and I have both seen so many different situations where the wives are involved in the purchase and there's some compromise. Right? If the guy goes, āWell, I need this size of safe.ā
And she goes, āWell, then it has to go in the garage.ā
And the guy's like, āOkay. Cool.ā
Can You Put a Gun Safe in the Garage?
Installing a gun safe in the garage can be a wise choice if done correctly. Many people choose the garage because it offers more space and easy access, especially when preparing for activities like hunting. However, moisture is a significant concern, as it can lead to rust, mold, and damage to firearms and essential items. To prevent this, it's important to keep the safe off the concrete floor using materials that allow air to flow underneath, and to use tools like dehumidifiers to control humidity. By taking these steps, you can safely store your gun safe in the garage without problems.
And then also, you're bringing things up like, āHey, this isn't just for my guns. This is for our family heirlooms. This is for our kids' birth certificates, our wedding stuff, our most important photographs.
I know, personally, my wife has put tons of documents and photographs inside our safe. So, bringing that part of the equation into it. It's not just a gun safe. It's our family's safe.
This is where we're gonna organize our passports. This is where we're gonna organize our life. So, yeah, there are a couple of different ways to come at it. If you're getting pushed back, make her a part of the process.
David Jr.: Well, there are the jokes about āDon't tell the wife about buying guns or a gun safe.ā But you want to include them. Because in a household, people use their safes for way more than they thought.
And like you're saying, she's gonna have a different opinion on what's needed. And I don't think there's really much convincing. You just have to have an honest conversation about what this is, what you want, and why you think your family needs it.
Kael: Absolutely. That's one of the biggest reasons why guys leave here without buying a safe ā they have to go home and ask for permission or include her. So, just have the conversation beforehand. Come in, and let's figure out the right solution.
Another thing would be, āHey. We can buy a smaller safe right now for, say, $2,000. Right? And then we're gonna run out of room. And then we're gonna come back and have to buy another safe for $5,000 instead of just buying the $5,000 safe to begin with.ā
You're saving money in the long run. So, we love it when people buy too small because we get to see you again down the road.
David Jr.: We try to tell them.
