The following is what we consider the baseline for a true high-security gun safe:

• At least a 3/16-inch steel body

• Around 1,000 pounds of weight

• A plate steel door

• Strong burglary and fire protection

Many manufacturers have reduced steel thickness over the years to keep prices lower, which has weakened many modern safes.
