Wildfires are a serious concern across Washington, and after major fires, we often help people open safes that have been through extreme heat.

One problem we see again and again is older safes that do not provide the level of fire protection their owners expect. A safe purchased 20, 30, or even 40 years ago may have been a high-quality safe at the time. But fire protection has improved significantly since then.

Many older safes were built with thick steel and strong doors, but very little fire insulation. Some were designed mainly as a stronger replacement for a wood and glass gun cabinet. Even higher-end models may have offered only 20 to 60 minutes of realistic fire protection.

That is why it is important to understand what your safe can actually protect today.

Over the years, better testing and real-world experience have helped manufacturers improve fire protection.

Modern safes can have more insulation in the body and door, better coverage around hinges, and improved door designs that reduce areas where heat can enter. Manufacturers have also learned more about how insulation needs to be installed to perform well.

The difference can be dramatic. An older premium safe might offer limited fire protection, while a newer high-end safe could provide 2½ hours of fire protection.

Security and fire protection also tend to work together. Today’s better-built safes are designed to maintain their structure while also slowing the transfer of heat into the interior.


Whiler there are some very fire-resistant safes available.

These extremely durable safes are the ones often dubbed fireproof safes because they can withstand extreme temperatures for such a long period of time. So, how do you pick the right fireproof safe for your needs?


08:02 – What Makes a Modern Fire Safe Better?

Some of today’s best fire and security safes use poured or cast insulation rather than relying only on layers of fireboard.

Concrete-based fills can be especially effective because they contain moisture that helps absorb heat. A poured fill can also eliminate gaps that may become hot spots during a fire.

Traditional fireboard can still work very well when installed correctly. The quality of the material and the way it is secured inside the safe both matter.

For example, Fort Knox uses a system that mechanically secures its fireboard rather than simply gluing pieces into place. A small thermal gap between the safe body and insulation also helps slow heat transfer.

These construction details may not be obvious when looking at a safe in a showroom, but they can make a major difference during a real fire.

13:56 – Improve Fire Protection Inside an Older Safe

Owning an older safe does not automatically mean you need to replace it. There are ways to add another layer of protection.

After opening safes affected by major fires, we have seen firsthand how simple barriers can help protect what is inside. Firearms stored in their original boxes, cases, or protective gun socks often survive in better condition than firearms left exposed inside the safe.

A small fire-resistant box or compact safe placed inside a larger safe can provide another layer of protection for cash, precious metals, documents, and other sensitive valuables.

Even relatively simple barriers can help reduce direct heat transfer. They can also provide added protection from moisture after a fire, when the inside of a safe can become a very wet environment.

16:45 – When Is It Time to Upgrade Your Safe?

One of the biggest questions to ask is whether your safe still matches the value of what you are protecting.

Someone may have purchased a safe 30 years ago to protect $20,000 worth of firearms and valuables. Today, that same collection could be worth $100,000 or more. The safe did not change, but the level of protection needed did.

We recommend taking inventory of what you currently store and comparing it with your safe’s security and fire ratings. If you are unsure what an older safe offers, we can often identify the model and approximate protection level from photos and manufacturer information.

Upgrading does not necessarily mean throwing away your old safe. Many customers keep older safes for lower-value items and purchase a newer, higher-rated safe for their most valuable belongings.

20:17 – Give Your Older Safe a New Purpose

Even if an older safe no longer provides the fire protection you need for your most valuable items, it can still be useful.

We have seen the need for secure storage change over the years. Firearm magazines, ammunition, accessories, and other components that may once have been left out are often worth securing today. An older safe can be a good place to store these lower-value items while a newer, higher-rated safe protects your most important valuables.

However, age alone does not determine quality. Some older safes are better built than inexpensive safes sold today. A new safe is not automatically a good safe.

21:09 – Look Beyond the Fire Rating

One of the biggest mistakes shoppers can make is choosing a safe based only on its advertised fire rating.

Unfortunately, fire ratings are not always easy to compare from one manufacturer to another. Instead, we encourage customers to look closely at how the safe is actually built.

How thick is the steel? How many layers of fire insulation are in the walls, ceiling, and door? How is the body welded together?

We appreciate manufacturers that are transparent about these details. Liberty, for example, provides information about steel thickness and insulation layers on many of its safes.

When shopping, ask questions. A salesperson should be able to explain how the safe is constructed rather than simply pointing to a fire-rating sticker.

22:50 – Yes, Fire Protection Really Does Work

After a major wildfire, it is easy to see destroyed safes and assume fire protection does not work. The reality is more complicated.

Some wildfires expose safes to extreme temperatures for far longer than a normal fire test. In one case, our team went to open a safe several days after a fire had been put out. The area around the safe was still about 800 degrees.

Under conditions like these, an inexpensive safe with limited insulation may not survive.

But we have also seen success stories. Heavier safes with thick insulation, strong steel bodies, fully welded construction, and rigid doors were much more likely to maintain their shape and protect what was inside.

23:54 – Match the Safe to the Job

We often compare buying a safe to buying a truck.

You would not buy a small Ford Maverick and expect it to safely tow a 20,000-pound trailer. You would choose an F-350 or F-450 designed for that kind of work.

Safes are similar. Two products may both be called “safes,” but their capabilities can be very different.

That does not mean everyone needs the biggest, heaviest, or most expensive safe available. The right choice depends on what you are protecting, how much it is worth, and the risks you want to protect against.

The important thing is understanding what you are actually getting for your money.

24:50 – Know What You’re Really Buying

A $1,500 safe may be the right choice for some customers, but problems arise when someone believes that safe provides much more protection than it actually does.

Safe retailers may also choose products based on price, what customers will buy, or how much weight their delivery crews can handle. That does not always mean those products provide the best protection for the customer.

That is why we encourage people to focus on construction, fire protection, security, and the value of what will be stored inside.
