How to Choose a Vault Door

1

What's the Primary Purpose?

Do you want to protect against fire? Are you creating a strong hold for firearms? Will the room serve as a safe room? Will the room be a sanctuary in the event of an apocalyptic event?
2

What Size Vault Door Can Your Space Accommodate?

The earlier you select your vault door, the more options you will have. If you are shopping for your vault door later in the design and build process, your options may be limited by space. You'll want to know: -Rough Opening for Your Door -Clear Opening of the Door

Best Door Swing

Interior door swings offer the advantage of the door being essentially flush with the wall. However, the interior swing eats into your storage space. An exterior door swing can give you more space within your safe, but requires a larger exterior footprint.

 Vault Doors Built to Last

Our collection of American-made vault doors provides security and protection from theft, fire, and personal assault. When choosing a door for your custom walk-in safe or personal safe room, it’s important to consider how thick the door is and how much it weighs.

Some vault doors weigh just 300 or 400 pounds. Constructed from lightweight materials and missing key reinforcements, these cheaper doors are more susceptible to prying, cutting, and ramming.

The lightest weight vault door for sale at NW Safe ranges from 600-700 pounds, with options as heavy as 3,000. These sturdier vault and panic room doors give you an added level of security. The locking bolts are another level of consideration. You always want the bolts on your vault door to extend into the door and the vault wall.

Safe Rooms

Safe Room Door vs. Vault Room Door

A safe room door (aka panic room door) is typically designed for quick entry and personal safety, while a vault door focuses on heavy-duty protection for valuables and long-term security. However, generally speaking, whether you’re shopping for a vault room door or safe room door, you’re looking at the same doors.

Some doors come with a “daygate,” also known as an inside release lock. This interior lock allows the door to be secured from the inside, preventing an exterior threat from entering the safe room even if they have the combination.

This internal locking mechanism doesn’t make a high-quality door, but it can offer an extra layer of protection to those shopping for a safe room door.

Vault Door FAQ

Find answers to commonly asked questions about our vault doors.

Yes. A vault door can be added to an existing doorway. In most instances, installing a vault door in an existing home requires some upgrades to the home’s structure. Why? Because to create a vault room and support a vault door installation, your wall will need to be structurally sound enough for the weight.

Generally speaking, vault rooms are located on the ground floor of a home. In many instances, this is the basement. For those homes that are built into hillsides, placing the vault room against the hillside is a natural way to add an extra layer of protection.

Yes. We offer full delivery and installation for vault doors. Vault doors are extremely heavy and difficult to move. Incorrectly installing them makes your vault room vulnerable. It can also cause your door to perform improperly, which may be dangerous.

There are a handful of places from which you can buy a Seattle vault door. Costco sells vault doors. Lowes sells vault doors. We’ve even seen vault doors listed on Etsy! And while we’re undoubtedly biased, we believe the best place to buy a vault door is from someone who can handle the delivery, installation, and maintenance.

These doors are massive and weigh a ton. They need to be handled with expertise to ensure they’re installed correctly so they function properly.
