Asset Protection for America’s Elite

Keep your personal and business valuables safe with a high-end commercial safe that offers six-sided protection.

A TL-30x6 Safe is certified by Underwriters Laboratory to withstand a tool attack for 30 minutes on all six sides of the safe. This safe is designed to secure high-value items from burglars and provide an elevated level of fire protection.

Is a TL-30x6 worth the investment? Who should buy a TL-30x6 safe? And just how much protection does a TL-30x6 provide? We’ve been selling safes since 1988, offering the biggest selection of high-security safe and vault doors in the Pacific Northwest. Our passion is helping folks protect the things they value.

Do we want you to buy a safe from us? Of course. But we also want you to make the most informed decision for your home and/or business. To help you do that, we’re sharing our honest assessment of what a TL-30x6 is and what it isn’t. This includes:

What does TL-30x6 Stand For?

Four people collaborating on a whiteboard in a bright office space.

TL stands for ‘Tool Latency.’ The TL-30x6 rating indicates that all six (6) sides withstood a tool attack by Underwriters Laboratory (UL) engineers for 30 minutes. In order for the engineers to be successful, they must either:

  1. Open the Door

  2. Create a 6-inch Hole

If the engineers are unable to achieve either of these two goals, the safe is awarded a TL-30x6 rating.

What is the Underwriters Laboratory?

Underwriters Laboratory (UL) is an independent, third-party testing organization dedicated to ensuring safety and reliability. Established in 1894, UL's mission is to promote secure living and working environments by providing trusted safety certifications for various products.

UL began testing safes for burglary resistance in 1923. Today, it offers five commercial burglary ratings, ranked from least to most secure, to indicate a safe's level of protection:

How Does the Underwriters Laboratory Testing Work?

In order for a safe to even be tested by UL engineers, it must meet strict construction requirements.

TL-30x6 Safe Construction Requirements

  • UL listed combination lock that is rated Group 2M, 1 or 1R. Alternatively, the safe could have a Type 1 Electronic lock.

  • Minimum weight of 750 lbs. or include instructions for anchoring the safe in one of three ways:

    • In a larger safe

    • To concrete blocks

    • On the premises where the safe will be used, such as bolting it to a concrete floor

  • Body walls of material must be equivalent to at least 1-inch open hearth steel with a minimum tensile strength of 50,000 P.S.I.

  • Walls must be fastened in a manner equivalent to a continuous ¼-inch penetration weld of open hearth steel with a minimum tensile strength of 50,000 P.S.I.

  • One hole, ¼-inch or less, to accommodate electrical conductors arranged to have no direct view of the door or locking mechanism.

TL-30x6 Safe Performance Testing Requirements & Procedures

Before testing, the UL engineer testing team reviews a complete full blueprint of the safe. Additionally, the team thoroughly disassembles the safe to uncover potential weaknesses or vulnerabilities before testing.

During the test, engineers can use any combination of manual and electronic tools. These tools include:

  • Common Hand Tools

  • Picking Tools (such as a pick ax)

  • Mechanical or Portable Electronic Tools (such drills and power saws)

  • Sledgehammers

  • Grinders (such as angle grinders)

During a TL-30x6 safe test, engineers have 30 minutes to open the door or create a six-inch hole in any of the safe’s six sides. While the test is being conducted, the clock is only running while the engineers are actively attacking the safe. If the engineers pause to have a snack or change tools, the clock is paused.

In reality, a 30-minute test could take all day (and sometimes does).

Why Get a TL-30x6 Safe?

No community is immune to crime. And in some places, cities are helping further legalize lawlessness — such as in Seattle! Both businesses and individuals with high-value items can reduce risk by installing a commercial safe with a UL listing.

The irony is, while legislation is being passed to keep criminals out of jail, the issue with retail crime has become so dire that a special task force was formed. The first of its kind in Washington State, the Organized Retail Crime Theft Task Force was formed to specifically fight “multi-jurisdictional crimes that endanger employees and cause significant economic harm to our state.”

The Seattle area community has been so wracked with break-ins that “fifty-six small business owners in northeast Seattle are coming together to urge Mayor Bruce Harrell to take urgent action to address a surge in break-ins that has left them feeling vulnerable.”

Who Benefits from a Commercial TL-30x6 Safe?

What is the Weight of a TL-30x6 Safe?

To receive a TL-3x60 rating, a safe must weigh at least 750 pounds.

What to Consider When Shipping a Commercial Safe?

a safe being delivered

There are many options when it comes to buying a safe. In the Spokane area alone, over 10 stores sell gun safes, with some also offering commercial safes. On the west side of Washington, there are 13 well-established places in Seattle to buy a safe, with several others also operating. However, before deciding where to purchase your commercial safe, consider the following factors:

Does the shop offer full-service delivery and installation?

Many safe retailers only provide curbside delivery, leaving you to figure out how to move and secure a 1,000+ pound safe on your own. Our expert delivery and installation team at NW Safe offers white-glove service, ensuring your safe is professionally installed and securely bolted down. Plus, we provide a thorough orientation to help you understand how your safe works.

Does the shop have TL-30x6 safes in stock?

Supply chain challenges have made it difficult for many businesses to keep products in stock. However, at NW Safe, our longstanding reputation for top-rated customer service has helped us build strong relationships with manufacturers, ensuring a consistent supply of safes.

Additionally, we typically deliver safes directly from our Enumclaw and Spokane locations rather than drop-shipping from manufacturers.
